My little kitty doesn't meow, only a stilted squeak. Any reasons why that would be?

Firs off, I am aware that it could just be the way she meows, but she has a bit of a sad history before she came to live with me, and I have a theory. But first her backstory:

Long story short, she lived in a basement for about 3 years, and the only care she got was being fed, and having her box cleaned.

She has been with me now for almost two years, and has transformed from an agoraphobic cat that clearly wants to be pet but cannot handle being touched and hiding if you sniffle too loud near her, to a timid little cuddle bug that sleeps under the blanket wi me.

Now the theory I have; since doing some reading I learned that cats only meow as kittens, but house cats continue to meow to communicate with people about wants and needs. I think that having been alone for so long, she forgot how/lost the ability to properly meow.

She can still make other cat noises that cats make (hissing, and a heartbreaking yeaowl, when I had to put her in a crate) so I know she isn't mute.

Just curious as to what others might think, and I'm happy to answer any questions!

Edit; a small typo
