Allergic to cats

Hi everyone!

So my partner has always been allergic to cats but I'm not. However, after a few hours of meeting our new kitten, I started experiencing something like swollen airways or closing of the throat. My partner was obviously suffering as well but we were both surprised at how I wasn't able to cope with the kitten since I have never been allergic to any animal and often play with them, even for hours, especially with cats.

We both love our little kitten very much and don't want to give him away but we don't know what to do about our allergies, especially if we don't know if our allergies will get worse with the kitten around.

The person who gave us the kitten had a lot of other animals in her house, and the house didn't smell quite pleasant either. It was stuffy and had a very strong smell and our kitten completely smelt like her house even after taking him back to our own home. We kept him in a room and soon the room also smelt like her house. We suspect it could be something from her house that was on the kitten that may be making us allergic but we're not sure. We didn't want to bathe the kitten either as I'm sure his travel to a new home is stressful enough.

Any help on this matter would be super helpful.
