Help! Took in a Stray. I need help gaining his trust.
I recently took in a stray cat on Friday. I found him on a community post that a cat was hanging around an apartment complex for the 3 weeks. I reached out, and said if no one claimed him, I would be more than happy to give the little guy a home.
The first night, was somewhat of a rollercoaster. When it was just myself and him, he was hissing, grumbling, anytime I got close to him. I made sure to give him space, and was pretty much more focused on setting up his kitty litter box, food, etc. etc. Later that night, my boyfriend came home and that cat was purring, rubbing up on him, sitting next to him, and at this point, actually fell asleep in bed with us.
The next day. VET DAY. Lets just say, it was traumatic on both ends. Found out he was chipped, but the contact information was outdated. Learned that he is 7-8 years old, pretty healthy, Named Odin. Siamese Mix.
Now, after the visit. I let him settle in under my bed. I sat next to the bed and read outloud. I didn't try to touch him, just wanted him to feel comfortable with me. But he's not having it. He has literally left the room, when I'm in it. He turns his back on me, if we happen to make eye contact. He wants nothing to do with me.
All the while, my room mates boyfriend comes over, and Odin is hanging out with the boyfriend, and lets him get picked up.
I do know the former owner was a female as well. SO I'm not sure if he prefers masculine energy?
What can I do to gain his trust? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
