IMPORTANT WARNINGS EVERY CAT PARENT SHOULD KNOW
Here is a list of important things a cat parent should know:
Essential Oils: Several Oils Are Toxic To Cats essential oils toxic to cats -In a Facebook post, a woman from Michigan, Sue Murray, has posted how she unknowingly poisoned her cat Ernie with essential oils. Her cat Ernie likes to sleep with her. On Christmas, she bought an oil diffuser and she put it in her bedroom.
After a few days, she noticed that Ernie was not his usual self, they took Ernie to the vet and according to her post, "I unknowingly have been poisoning him since Christmas and feel the need to warn everyone who might be unaware of the toxicity of essential oils." -Murray.
While not all essential oils are bad for cats, A lot of them are. So better be safe than sorry.
Anti Fleas: Do NOT Use Your Dog's Anti-Flea Meds For Your Cat Do not use your dog's anti-flea medication on your cat. A dog's anti-flea medication contains permethrin, which is poisonous to cats, can cause full-blown seizures, and can even be fatal.
Suffocation: Keep Plastic Bags, Food Bags Away Last February 26, 2018, Christina Young posted on Instagram about a very sad accident involving her dog Petey, that could have been prevented.
She kissed her pit bull Petey and left for work. Christian came home first and he found it strange that Petey did not run to meet them. To their horror, Petey was found lifeless on the floor.
What happened?
There was a bag of chips that Petey feasted on, and Petey ate the chips and was going for the last bit of crumbs. In the process, Petey was inhaling the bag tighter and tighter around his head, ultimately resulting in suffocation.
Christina was wondering that Petey, smart pitbull that he is, was not able to remove the empty bag with his paws. But after doing research, it showed that 3-5 pet suffocations happen every week, and 42% of the suffocation happens while the owner is in the next room.
It only takes 3 minutes for their oxygen to drop to fatal levels. Popcorn bags, bread bags, cat/dog treat bags, cereal bags seem to be the most common culprit. So please make sure there are no bags around your furbaby that can cause suffocation.
Letting Your Cat Eat From The Can In one Facebook Cat Group, another breaking cat news – one cat parent recounted how her furbaby has severely cut its tongue after letting it eat from the can. It is natural for cats to lick the can and in the process, seriously injure its tongue. Neither should you leave an empty can around and better to just dispose of it immediately.
Letting Your Kitten Sleep With You While it is so tempting to keep your kitten with you while you sleep, you run the risk of literally sleeping over your kitten. Kittens are too small and helpless to crawl away if you happen to roll over them as you sleep. This has happened before with a cat parent as relayed in a forum in Quora.
Cat Friendly Plants vs Poisonous Plants? It is natural for your cats to climb and explore. It is thus hard to keep plants out of cat's reach. Before you keep plants indoors or out on your yard, know some of these most common poisonous plants for cats: Aloe Vera (Aloe sp.) Amaryllis (Amaryllis sp.) Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale) Azaleas and Rhododendrons (Rhododendron sp.) Castor Bean (Ricinus communis) Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum sp.) Cyclamen (Cyclamen sp.) English Ivy (Hedera helix) Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe sp.) Lilies (Lilium sp.) Marijuana (Cannabis sativa) Oleander (Nerium oleander) Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.) Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta) Spanish thyme (Coleus ampoinicus) Tulip and Narcissus bulbs (Tulipa and Narcissus sp.) Yew (Taxus sp.)
